Grandma and Grandpa Great

It was so fun to have Grandma and Grandpa Great here for a couple of weeks.  We asked them what they wanted to do while they were here.  Grandma Great said she wanted to go to Prague in the Czech Republic, and Grandpa Great said he wanted to go to Salzburg in Austria.  They also wanted to spend time experiencing our lives in Germany too.  We were able to do all of those things.  Every day was
good.

We picked them up at the Frankfurt Airport on Thursday August 25th.  We went to our apartment to get them unpacked and settled then off we went to spend three fabulous days in Prague.  We went to the summer gardens, the Cathedral and castle, the Charles Bridge, the square, and the Jewish quarter.  We also took a boat cruise with a guided tour, and we took a carriage ride around town starting at the square.

We got home Sunday in time for church.  That night we played Quiddler and relaxed.  The next week we went to Limburg and took public transportation to the old square in Frankfurt where we had lunch by the river and took a boat cruz through Frankfurt. Then Wednesday, back on the road to Munich and Salzburg.

In Munich we went to a Hobrau for dinner. This is what Grandpa Great calls an old beer hall, but they serve all kinds of food and drinks.  I had apple juice.  The fun part is you sit at a table with strangers and talk to get to know them.  There was also a band playing German music in the background.  It was a fun night.  The next day we went to Dachau and took a tour which was sobering.  Then off to Salzburg.

We spent three days in Salzburg.  What a beautiful place.  This is where the Sound of Music was filmed and without planning it, we went to several places that were in the movie.  We went to Mozarts Platz, enjoyed an organ concert in the Cathedral, walked down narrow streets with guild signs over the doors to Mozarts birthplace.  Then we walked to Maribel Gardens and Palace.  Then, my favorite part of the day was riding a funicular up to the Salzburg Castle for dinner and a concert at the top of the Castle.  We had to walk several flights of steps to get to where the concert was in the Gold room at the top.  Very fun.  Grandma Great said she got over 13,000 steps in on that day.

The next day we went to Hellbrunn which was a summer residence in the country for relaxing.  It was a beautiful setting in a 200 acre park and trick fountains in the residence garden.  We took a tour of that.  We had lunch at an outdoor cafe in the park and then visited the palace.  We also visited the gazebo that was in the Sound of Music.  From there, we drove towards Frankfurt and stopped Erlangen for the night.

We got back to Frankfurt in time for church and to relax the rest of the night.  Elder and Sister Waterfall came over and we all played Quiddler together.

The next week we spent showing Grandma and Grandpa great some of our day to day activities.  They came to the office with us, participated in a zone Family Home Evening, played pickleball, attended a potluck lunch at the office (to celebrate birthdays), and talked to many of our friends.  We also went to Hessen Park one morning.  It was fun to let them get a taste of what we do on our mission.
