Frauen Kirche Dresden

Another good week.  On Friday it was quickly decided that we would drive a senior couple and another driver to Leipzig to pick up a couple of vans to take to different areas to help with the refugee situation.  We quickly packed and made the approximately 4 hour drive.  We got to the car dealership at about 6:30, and it closed at 7:00, so it worked out fine.  Manuel got his van and quickly left for Budapest.  The Adairs and we found a hotel and spent the night.  We got up early on Saturday morning and had breakfast in the hotel.  Then, they left for Romania and we left for Frankfurt.

On the way back to Frankfurt, we went to Dresden for a few hours.  It is a wonderful city.  We went to the Dome area which is where the Frauen Kirche (Church of Our Lady) is located.  It was bombed and destroyed during World War Two, but was restored using stones from the destroyed church and other stones from other destroyed churches in Germany.  There is a statue of Martin Luther in the square in front of the church.  I loved the light and airy feeling inside the church.  A stark contrast to the many dark and dreary churches I have been to in Europe.

We paid 10 euros each to walk the 381 steps to the top of the observation tower at the top of the church.  The steps and ramp we walked on were inside the church so we could see the different areas of the church as we walked.  It was amazing.

After we got out of the church, it began to rain so we ducked into a nearby cafe and had hot chocolate and waffles (with ice cream and hot raspberries on top).  We took our time eating, and the rain stopped.  We walked around the square a little longer, then drove home to Frankfurt.

Sixteen couples who have served in Ukraine, Poland, Russia, and other places in the past were asked to come for short missions to help with the refugee situation.  They will be spread through missions along the border to help in whatever ways they can.  One of those couples was sent to our office to help, so some of the pressure has been taken off of us and put on them.  It's good to have them here.  They are Elder and Sister Murri from Eden Utah and served a mission in Poland.  We are glad they are here.

A few pictures of our day.

Out of the rain for some hot chocolate and waffles with hot raspberry sauce and ice cream.  Yum!

This is where a choir would sing to make it sound like a choir from angels to the people below in the church.

We loved the soft airy colors.

Looking down into the church from our walk to the top.

A view of the Elbe River in Dresden from the top of the Frauen Kirche.

Our hotel in Leipzig, Germany.
